The enduring gift of a teacher’s care

Extraordinary lives are often reflected in the impact they have on others.

Beyond her role as a teacher, Parimala, often referred to simply as ‘Teacher” was a mentor, guide, and motherly figure whose care extended well past the classroom. The following reflection, written by one of her former students, captures the profound impact she had—transforming opportunity into possibility, and nurturing character and confidence that have continued to shape lives long after school days ended.

“There are many who pass through our life. Some you remember fleetingly, and most others fade away. However, there are a handful who shape and mould you for life like the banks of a river. Mrs Dharma aka Teacher is one of them in my life.

Met her and late Mr Dharmarajah in 1969 in Karak, as a student in SMK Karak. Besides being my headmaster and class teacher, they opened their home for me to study at night under proper lighting, as I grew up in a village with no electricity. It also came with extra perks of maternal care with hot snacks and milo drink.

Teacher was one of the few who identified the potential in me and nurtured me to be what I am now. Over the fifty-five years our relationship evolved from being teacher-student to mother-son.

Though physically she is no more with us, her legacy will live on through many students like me.”
